The History of Maqui

The Maqui is a hearty evergreen shrub native to South America’s Patagonia Region (Chile and Argentina). The latin name of the plant is Aristotelia chilensis, a member of the Elaeocarpaceaefamily. It grows to approximately 3-5 m in height, and produces small purple-black berries, approximately 6 mm in diameter. The Maqui Berry also bears several other names, including Chilean Wineberry, and locally as Maqui or Maquei, Queldrón, Ach, Koelon, and Clon.

Maqui Berries appear deep purple in color. Traditionally used by the Mapuche Indians (the Indigenous inhabitants of Chile) for supporting stamina and increasing strength, this kept secret is gaining popularity by users throughout the world claiming the same positive results. In fact, the berries continue to this day to be wild-harvested and hand-picked by the Mapuche Indians utilizing sustainable harvesting practices.

Western medicine has demonstrated due diligence in exploring the Maqui’s claims, and the berry has been the focus of rigorous laboratory testing. The results of the research has uncovered that the secret to the Maqui’s unique restorative properties is directly linked to its uniquely rich coloring. The deeply purple pigment of the fruit can be attributed to its exceptionally high levels of polyphenol and anthocyanin, a powerful antioxidant. The Maqui has the highest level of antioxidants of all the known fruit in the world, thus earning the tiny purple berry the title of The World’s #1 Superfruit.
